Episode 3 features Dr Jane Merewether, Early Education Research fellow at Edith Cowan University in Perth, WA. She has 18 years' experience in Early Childhood Centres, and a close relationship with Reggio Emilia in Italy and with REAIE through her assistance with Networks in WA and as a former committee member.
In this podcast Dr Jane Merewether talks about ‘Environments, Spaces and Relations’ and discusses theories proposed by Peter Moss, Friedrich Fröbel, Maria Montessori, John Dewey and how they extol the virtues of spaces and materials in education. She then describes the 10 broad characteristics of the educational environments in Reggio Emilia as discussed in the book "Children, Spaces and Relations" by Giulio Ceppi and Michele Zini. (Available here) and gives her perspective of The "Environment as the Third Teacher" as a "..metaphor that acknowledges that humans aren't the only ones who teach". Jane later discusses the importance of the Outdoor Environment in Australian Education, and Relatedness: the Role of the Environment in Democracy.
